Shapeways Ring

The idea for this project started out with sketches of archways based on art deco style. once I had the basic sketch laid out I used it as a reference to recreate the same design in Rhino using arcs.Once the line work is completed and connected, the design is copy and pasted into a seamless flat design. In order to ensure the ring fits the design is scaled onto a line that is the same length as the circumference as the sized finger.

Once as the design has been oriented around the correct size ring into a cylinder a few simple commands are used complete the ring.

I used the pipe command to make consistent tubing to create the solid structure of the ring. The final command used was Boolean Union which took the individual pieces of pipe and joined all of them together with no overlapping solids.

The Final product is amazing, I am pleased with quality and detail of the finished product. The satisfaction is immense considering I started with a drawing and I now have a physical object.

One thing I could have done better would have been to make the ring functional, currently, it spans the length of the pinky finger and doesn't allow for much movement. Movement can be achieved by removing portions of the ring on the underside while leaving the top side intact allowing the finger to bend while wearing the ring.

In the future, I would use a more simple design. The problem with the small piping resulted in rough/missing detail where the pipes meet. A larger design would result in less detail but would remove webbing/bad edges

This project taught me the skills necessary to create a physical object through many different processes. Starting from a sketch and working its way through rhino I now have a ring that I designed.

Screwdriver

This project allowed for personal creativity within the specified guidelines. Once a control point curve is used to draw the basic outline of the screwdriver it is used to rotate and make the basic screwdriver shape. Once completed a flat wirecut is used to make the flat head of the screwdriver. Lastly, the grip design was created after using a small pipe arrayed around the object which was then differenced from the screwdriver to leave an indentation. I used the same process to give a personalized name to the screwdriver. Some changes I would do differently in the future would include more attention to detail. This includes filleting edges to make a more smooth seamless look as well as a more proportionate model. One thing I could have improved on this project was the proportion of the screwdriver, even though I stayed within the guidelines my screwdriver is unproportionate. simple measurements and planning could have lead to a more precise screwdriver.

Toy Hammer

I chose to complete this prompt by following the exact instructions. This project is much like the screwdriver. This project starts with line work and then uses the generated lines to create surfaces. Here you can see all the lines used to create the hammer below. This project taught me that the tutorials are very helpful because I have used the exact same processes to create this hammer as I did with other projects including the phone case and the chess pieces. There's nothing I would have done differently to create this hammer. However, if I were to recreate this object with the knowledge I now I have could replicate this hammer in many different ways. I completed this project after the assigned due date. Since I decided to finish this assignment after completing other projects in the class I'm pleased that I would be able to replicate this hammer with ease, as well as be able to design a much more complicated/ detailed hammer with ease

Chess Set

My chess set was inspired by one which appeared if low resolution and angular. Each piece was constructed by twisting and stretching various pentagons. The end result, when exported with low tolerances, is a low poly version of the original chess set design. Although the chess pieces turned out exactly as imagined the renderings did not. The renderings could use improvements, they don't do the physical 3D print justice. This project taught me how to generate a 3D object and create a physical print. Some of the most important ideas to keep in mind are the orientation of printing. In order to create a quality print, minimal support must be used. If I were to do something different in the future I would alter the original design of the low poly on one of the side. This would keep the design consistent with each "side" but breaks up the repetitiveness of the same design on both teams.
